Compost Worms At Wormtec worm farming and vermiculture, we use compost worms in our commercial operation as our main workers, converting our custom feed mixture into soil improving products that we use to improve the environment, as well as in our home worm farms. We use a mixture of three different compost worms tiger worms, red worms and blue worms. These worms will consume huge amounts of organic matter 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The common earth worm is not suitable for use in worm farms, you require surface feeding compost worms.

Compost Worms and Vermiculture Not all worms are suitable for vermiculture or home worm farms. You require compost worms, these are the surface feeding worms. Compost worms will consume large volumes of organic matter. Watch as one of nature's best recyclers transform your organic waste (such as animal manures, grass cutting, leaves and even organic kitchen waste into environmentally friendly soil improving products for use in and around your gardens and lawns. The worms unique digestive system allows them to convert all this organic material into worm cast in a very short amount of time, while eliminating all smell and pathogens.

Climate There are three compost worms that are suitable for use in vermiculture in Australia. They are used Australia wide and suitable for all our climatic conditions. These three worms are the most important worms in the vermiculture industry. They will consume large volumes of waste each and every day. They will consume up to their own body weight in waste each day.

Worms we use in our operation We use a mixture of these three compost worms in our commercial vermiculture operation converting our custom feed mixture into organic soil improving products that benefit the environment. They are the tiger worm ( EISENIA FETIDA) the red worm (LUMBRICUS RUBELLUS} and the blue worm (PERIONYX EXCAVATUS.)

The Worms These compost worms are also suitable for home worm farms or compost heaps even in moist well mulches garden beds. The red worm, tiger worm and blue worm will all work together to eliminate organic waste products.

LUMBRICUS RUBELLUS(Red worm) - Will thrive under a wide range of conditions. It is the most commonly used compost worm and can withstand cooler conditions than the other two worms. They are very prolific breeders and will consume huge quantities of organic matter. L Rubellus is red in colour, feeds and breeds near the surface and grow to approximately 75mm.

EISENIA FETIDA (Tiger worm) This worm is found in high quality organic matter. It prefers a more tropical climate. They are also prolific breeders. They are a red colour with a clear yellow tail. They grow to be approximately 100mm.

PERIONYX EXCAVATUS (Blue worm) This worm can tolerate a broad range of conditions. This is a tropical worm and a very active worm. It has a distinct blue colour on the head end. It grows to be around 150mm and is also a prolific breeder.
